Goulburn is a city of over 21,000 people situated in the Southern Highlands 177km south of Sydney. Goulburn has the distinction of being the first inland city in Australia and this is reflected in many of the charming historical buildings in the city. The NSW Police Academy and Goulburn Maximum Security Prison are situated in this peace loving town. Queen Victoria dubbed Goulburn the "City of Roses" but in recent times a prolonged drought has made it extremely difficult for local gardeners to maintain lawns and flower beds. The historic Goulburn Railway station is well worth a visit. Australia's oldest brewery designed by colonial architect Franis Greenway has regular tastings and heritage tours. A enormous statue of a merino ram is found on the southern part of the town and has become an icon for sheep and grazing in the area.
