Darwin (population 125,000) is considered the tropical capital of Australia. Situated in the Northern Territory it is a city of enormous energy with a distinctly anything-goes spirit. Darwin was destroyed and rebuilt after the Japanese invasions and bombings in the Second World War. The city was again destroyed and rebuilt in 1974 after Cyclone Tracey hit on Christmas eve. The city has a magnificent harbour and is the starting point for exploring the top end of Australia.
