As it is permitted to stay here up to a month, people often look like they have moved in permanently. You need to get there early. We had mobile phone reception but it was patchy - and that was with an external aerial. Very close by (track beside ablution block) is the track to the old town of Dalrymple that has now gone but precedes Townsville and Charters Towers. Nice swimming here on the Burdekin River. Darymple was a reasonably large gold mining town until it was washed away in a flood and never rebuilt. Still some ruins and graves there.
This is one of those places that lies on a looooong stretch of rather plain driving and is a great place to cool down for an hour or a day or two. Some spend weeks here.
Rest area on both sides of the road. Toilets/showers located across footbridge on the other side of the creek. semi-shaded. Some noise from Large semi-trailers on road, but you can drive a fair distance from the road if you wish. Campfires allowed. Safe swimming in creek. Toilets could be better Campground features: a free camping area on the banks of Fletcher Creek, with some facilities.
Location: before the entrance to the park, just off the highway. Visitors can camp along either side of the creek.
Access: turn off the Gregory Development Road at Fletcher creek. The campground can be reached by conventional vehicle. It is accessible for trailers and caravans. Number of sites: open area without separately defined sites.
Campsites are suitable for: tent camping beside your car, caravans, camper trailers and small motorhomes. Campsite surface: dirt. Facilities: flushing toilets, cold showers, picnic shelters, tables and wood barbecues. Open fires: allowed (except when fire bans apply). Generators: permitted. Essentials to bring: drinking water, rubbish bags and insect repellent. Bookings: no booking required. It is managed by Charters Towers Regional Council. Mobile phone coverage: generally not available.
