Mansfield is a lovely country town with lots of history. It is close to Snowy River country and for the Ned Kelly buffs, Stringybark creek is not too far away. This is the spot of the famous shootout between the Kelly gang and 4 police officers on 26th October 1878 for which Ned was sentanced to hang as punishment. Just recently the shootout site has been confirmed and a walking track has been layed with informative signs explaining the sega. Three police were shot dead, Sergent Kennedy, Constable Lonigan and constable Scanlan. They are burried in the Mansfield cemetery and their graves are easily found. In the centre of town there is the police memorial dedicated to the men who died that day. Ned shot the police in defence, he was wanted for a crime he did not commit and made an outlaw. It was unfortunate the shootout happened at all. That day was the day the kelly gang was formed. They went onto become the most famous outlaw gang in Australian history.
