Kerang is a town of 4,000 people located on the Murray River and situated 278km north of Melbourne. Kerang is the commercial centre to a large irrigation district devoted to dairying, horticulture, lucerne and grain. Kerang's symbol is a flying ibis. The area around Kerang has many lagoons and lakes which historically attracted large numbers of ibis for nesting and breeding. Prolonged drought and climate change has impacted on many rookeries in the same way it has impacted on the Murray.
