Mungo National Park - Mungo National Park NSW

Lake Mungo is a significant site due to the recent discovery of the remains of what became known as Mungo Man – the oldest human found in Australia and Mungo Lady, the oldest person in the world to be ritually cremated.
Lake Mungo is the central feature of Mungo National Park, and is one of seventeen lakes in the Willandra Lakes system. The sediments at Lake Mungo have been deposited more than 100,000 years ago and the eastern shore of the lake is what’s called the 'Walls of China' – a 26 km long series of lunettes, about thirty metres high, formed over thousands of years.

Spent a wonderful two days/nights at Lake Mungo and were fortunate enough to watch the full moon rising over the Walls of China while the sun set in the west - fantastic!
The whole area is very interesting - allow half a day for the 70 km self-guided drive as there are lots of different stops. During school holidays local indigenous guides provide in-depth commentary on guided walks and slide shows. Very worthwhile. The Mungo NP Visitor Centre is open every day and provides visitors with all the information you need to get an understanding of what the park protects and how you can enrich your exploration of certain park features.
Visitors camping in either of the parks 2 camp areas need to fill out a self-registration form here and can pick up a map and guide-trail of the self-guided 70km driving tour that provides an opportunity to explore a large area of the park.
The Visitors Centre can be found 11Okm north-east of Mildura via Buronga along the Arumpo Road, or 147 km north-west of Balranald. All roads are unsealed and are impassable after rain. A detailed information package is available from the Buronga office or the website. Vehicle entry fee applies.

Mungo and the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area are magnificently spectacular, especially at sunset on the Walls Of China! The area has a vast, almost unbelievable, historic past and is an extremely interesting landscape with scrub land, dry clay pans and pristine white all rolled into one! Make sure you stop in and say hello to all at Turlee Station Stay just next door and check out their camp ground to base yourself whilst exploring the local area.
