Brisbane Botanic Gardens - Brisbane QLD

Album 1 in this series features the Fern House in the lovely Brisbane Botanic Gardens. The Fern House was opened in July 2002 and has over 80 different species and varieties on display. Here you will be able to view a large variety of ferns including the Fork Fern. This attractive and hardy fern ally has no true roots and absorbs water through rhizoids growing on the rhizome (stem). The hanging stems dotted with the bright yellow spore-producing synangia make an unusual display. There are many varietys of lycopodiaceae. The spores of this family are full of volatile oils which are highly flammable. These spores were a primary ingredient in fireworks and in flash powders used in photography.
